To begin, how has your environment sculpted your outlook on life?
I hail from the picturesque city of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Growing up in this culturally rich and nature-inspired environment has significantly shaped my artistic perspective. The pristine landscapes and the historical depth of the region have instilled in me a profound appreciation for the intricate interplay between nature and human history, which often finds expression in my work.
How long did it take you to develop your signature retro sci-fi style?
My journey as an artist began at the age of 8 when my father gifted me a disposable analog film camera. This early introduction to photography ignited a passion that has been a constant in my life. The development of my signature style, characterized by a fusion of analog and digital techniques creating a distinct retro aesthetic, evolved over the years. It's a journey that spans my formal education, from specializing in design and photography in high school to earning a Master’s degree in Visual Communication Design.
What does spirituality mean to you?
To me, spirituality is an exploration of the profound connections that bind us to the natural world and each other. This exploration is deeply woven into my artistic practice. Nature serves as a spiritual muse, guiding my work to elevate our awareness of the environment. The scenes I capture become a bridge between the tangible and the spiritual, encouraging viewers to reflect on our relationship with the planet and its ecosystems.
What are the key ideas and themes that inspire you the most and why?
My artistic endeavors center around the concept of Nostalgic Environmental Magical Realism. Drawing inspiration from the enchanting realms of nature and the nuanced tapestry of history, I aim to craft visual narratives that illuminate our profound connection to the environment. Engaging in a delicate dance between realism and abstraction, my art consistently delves into pressing environmental issues, inviting viewers to reassess our collective impact on the planet.
In addition to these themes, the vast expanse of space, the ethereal quality of dreams, the boundless realms of imagination, and the allure of magic also serve as pivotal sources of inspiration for me. These elements contribute to the multifaceted layers of my artistic expression, expanding the narrative palette and allowing for a richer exploration of the human experience and its intersection with the natural world.
Are there any artists/books that have had a strong impact on you?
Rather than being influenced by a specific artist or book, my artistic journey draws profound inspiration from the era in which I grew up. The 90s, during my childhood, holds a significant place in shaping my creative perspective. The tangible elements that surrounded me—books, magazines, and VHS tapes from the 70s, 80s, and 90s—have left an indelible mark on my work. It's the unique aesthetic of that era, with its blend of nostalgia and innovation, that truly informs and influences the depth of my artistic expression.
What drives you the most? What lights the flame of passion inside of you?
The core of my artistic drive is fueled by a deep connection to nature and space. The ability to transcend the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums, creating a visual language that communicates the beauty and fragility of our world, ignites a passionate flame within me. It's the prospect of inspiring change and fostering a renewed appreciation for our environment that propels me forward.
How has this past year been for you?
Beyond the professional realm, this year has held profound personal significance. For the past decade, I had harbored a deep-seated wish to own my own home. Having rented various spaces over the years, the dream of a place to call entirely my own persisted. In the middle of this year, the stars aligned in a way I hadn't anticipated. My landlord informed me that this would be the last year in my current apartment, as her son would be moving in in Januray 2024. This led me to search for a new home, and, miraculously, I was able to purchase my very first condo, financed entirely by the income generated from my art. The culmination of this long-cherished dream, funded by the fruits of my artistic endeavors, has added an extra layer of fulfillment to a year already marked by adaptability, resilience, and creative innovation.
How do you feel about the future?
Currently working from a small desk in my rented apartment, I'm eager to explore the expanded possibilities that a dedicated art space will offer. The upcoming year holds the promise of unleashing a new wave of artistic expression and experimentation within the welcoming confines of my own home. I'm looking forward to seeing how this change in my creative environment will inspire and shape the art that I'll produce in the coming months. The anticipation for this fresh chapter adds an extra layer of excitement as I look towards the future with optimism and enthusiasm.
